Few urban scenes are crazier currently than Melbourne. The Aussie metropolis is a hotbed of funk, jazz, hip-hop and everything in between, with new bands emerging and rising to prominence seemingly on a weekly basis. Remi, EMRSN, Emma Donovan & the Putbacks, The Harpoons and yes, Hiatus Kaiyote. Every single one of them overflowing with soul and hailing from Melbourne.

One of the latest additions to the roster is 30/70, a family of 11 musicians who characterise themselves more as a family than a band. Depending on how many members are presiding over a given track, the vibe can range from steady hip-hop to improvised jazzy madness. They self-released their first album in 2015, and now they have another one out, courtesy of South London mainstays Rhythm Section.

Despite only being eight tracks long, it’s a powerful statement, rippling with unusual beats, bizarre lyrics and gorgeous melodic scapes. Perhaps the most enthralling track on the album, Misrepresent, has now been graced with an equally mesmerising video. In it, we see various members of the band and their surrounding community, all of them female, losing their shit to the infectious beat in a kind of defiant frenzy.
