The Xbox One is blessed with a rich and diverse range of titles released every single week. This week, we look at the top picks that are released – and give you all the current news and announcements to give you an informed and honest decision.

Destiny: Rise of Iron – September 20th

Destiny Rise of Iron

Not quite a full game, but this expansion is set to fully reinvigorate the beloved Destiny grind for a whole bunch of people – so we’ll give it an honourable mention at the top of this list.

Rise of Iron is Destiny’s fourth expansion pack since its initial release back in 2014, and is currently Bungie’s main answer to quelling rumours of the highly anticipated sequel. Without spoiling anything; you can expect the typical stuff (new raid, weapons, etc.), alongside a fresh and exciting campaign in which you’ll be able to unlock a new social space as you progress – Felwinter’s Peak.

Rise of Iron is continuing on from the storyline left behind from Destiny’s other expansion packs, and as a result you will need The Taken King to play it unfortunately. Furthermore, I’ve got bad news for all of you loyal Xbox 360/PS3 fanboys – it’s only set to be available on current gen. For the rest of us that have already upgraded, this is likely a sign that the DLC is going to be extra spectacular, and I can’t wait to see what Bungie have lined up for us.

Killer Instinct: Definitive Edition – September 20th

Killer Instinct

Nothing especially new here, but nonetheless exciting for bargain hunters and KI fans. The Definitive Edition is shaping up to be a cheap way to get the full KI experience. For 30 quid, you can look forward to all characters and content from Seasons 1 through 3 – alongside a whole bunch of other goodies. If the 26 characters and 20 stages weren’t enough for you, it also includes KI Classic 1 and 2 – and you can treat your senses to every song, trailer and concept art, ever, whilst you let your thumbs cool off from all of that button-mashing. And that was just for the digital edition, the physical disc copy will treat you to another soundtrack and a Gold Gargos skin. You lucky devils.

Batman: Episode 2 – 20th September

Telltale Batman

Another instalment in Telltale Games’s Batman series. This Episode, dubbed Children of Arkham, is the second of 5 episodic entries that get released every 1-2 months. It follows on from the story of the first, so as a result you’ll need Episode 1 to play it. If you’ve played Telltales’s The Walking Dead series, then you’ll be right at home here – as it’s the exact same point-and-click adventure we all know and love. Other than the obvious story differences, there isn’t much to differentiate between the several series’s that Telltale’s made – which can make the experiences a bit repetitive. That being said, fans of the caped crusader and fans of Telltale are sure to love this.

Firewatch – September 21st

Firewatch Game

Once a Playstation exclusive, but not anymore. Firewatch is coming to the Xbox One this week and it’s quite possibly the most exciting game on this list for me. Firewatch is a story focused adventure game, in which you explore the Wyoming wilderness after being drawn out of your watch tower by a disturbance. Although this game beautifully invests itself into portraying the themes of loneliness and the fragility of relationships – its real beauty, at least for me, expresses itself in its orange-hued aesthetic. This game really is exceptionally beautiful, and something I’m sure you all will take pleasure in experiencing.

Virginia – September 22nd

This game has certainly slipped under the radar for me, with me only discovering its existence by the sheer coincidence of me writing this article. But don’t let its more-than-modest advertising fool you like it did me. Virginia is a single-player first-person thriller adventure game, which revolves around the detective work you and your FBI partner, Maria Halperin, embark upon after discovering the strange and out-of-character disappearance of a young boy.

Similar to Firewatch, this game certainly has an interesting art style – although from looking at pre-released screenshots, it features a heavily washed down colour palette of greys and highlights of red. Which certainly isn’t a bad thing, the colours heavily set the general tone of the game in a way that music and other art forms cannot.

As of writing this article, it’s been less than 24 hours since I’d even heard of this title – and I already can’t wait to play it.

Forza Horizon 3 – September 27th

Forza Horizon 3

If you’ve ever spent a prolonged period of time on an Xbox, then you’ll need little introduction to the Forza franchise – primarily due to the plethora of advertisements you get bombarded at you every time you so much as look on the Home dashboard. If you like cars, or even just open world games – then you’ll love Forza. Horizon 3 is set to follow the same tried and true formula of the previous entries – if it’s not broke, am I right? You can do all the usual; fix up a car to match the specs only achievable in your wildest dreams, race friends and online rivals alike across vast open terrains, and just roam around enjoy the scenery to the harmony of the 8 diverse radio stations. This triple A title is sure to entertain fans of the series and the racing genre alike.
