In case you missed it, Warner Bros.’ iconic The Iron Giant from 1999 had a trailer for its remastered Signature Edition released over the past week. It will be coming back to theaters for a short stretch later in the year; Kleenex apparently isn’t included with the ticket price.

According to Vin Diesel, who supplied the voice for the titular character, we shouldn’t be too surprised if it gets a sequel sometime soon.

I have been very lucky to have played so many interesting characters… one of the first and one of my favorites is… the Iron Giant.P.s. Don't be surprised when you hear WB announce the sequel.

“I have been very lucky to have played so many interesting characters… one of the first and one of my favorites is… the Iron Giant. P.s. Don’t be surprised when you hear WB announce the sequel.”

Although a critical darling and cult classic, The Iron Giant was one of the biggest animated box office flops of all time, recouping only $31.3 million on a $70 million budget. Considering it has a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it could be the case that the public was tired of 2D animations following the success of Pixar releases like Toy Story and A Bug’s Life. Either that or poor marketing led to its lack of success, but it certainly deserved more.

The possibility of a sequel probably hinges on whether or not its remastered version finds a good audience when it hits cinemas, otherwise it might just be the final nail. Perhaps a crowdfunded spiritual successor could be another avenue? Who knows, it would just be nice to see it receive more recognition.
