It’s been ten years since the release of Danny Boyle’s cult-cum-phenomenon release, Trainspotting. Now it seems we’re finally in for a sequel: T2 is set to hit cinemas on January 27th 2017.

But so far it’s been nothing more than dribs and drabs to show for what’s happening: copious shots of Ewen Bremner (Spud) and Boyle on set, along with a teaser trailer that’s more teaser than trailer.

In fact, the 45-second clip that’s supposedly serving as promotion contains no new footage, merely highlights from the original film, a release date, and a list of the returning cast: Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle.

Trainspotting is based on a novel of the same name by Scottish author and playwright Irvine Welsh, following the lives of a group of heroine junkies in Edinburgh. In 2002, Welsh wrote the sequel, Porno, which T2 is expected to be loosely based on – though we can see why they didn’t choose to copy the name again.

Welsh has also written a prequel to Trainspotting, Skagboys, which was published in 2012 and follows Mark Renton and Sick Boy’s descent into heroin addiction.

Original screenwriter John Hodge will also be returning for the sequel.

Although Boyle had been feeling the pressure of living up to the expectations of fans, just before the crew headed up to Edinburgh last October for a script run through, he said in an interview with Vulture that he had “this feeling about it, where it honours the original and it won’t disappoint people. It’s not the same film, but it can’t be, and we wouldn’t want it to be.”

At the London premiere of his latest film, Steve Jobs, Boyle told the BBC:

“It’s worrying because people will kill us if we made a bad job of it.

“I will get absolutely crucified. But you have to thrive on that potential danger within it and if it feeds into it, you might get a decent film out of it, you know.”
