Single of the Week: Tycho – Epoch

While this track has officially been out for almost 2 weeks now, its presence here on the Single of the Week podium also relates to Tycho’s new, full album of same name, which dropped last Friday and took everyone by surprise. Epoch is the third entry in a trilogy of albums on Ghostly International which began with 2011’s Dive, continued with 2014’s Awake and now comes to an end here. It’s hard to say anything concrete with only a few days to get to grips with it, but it may well be the strongest album the electro-chillout practitioner has ever released.

For the unfamiliar, Tycho is the name of a project spearheaded by Scott Hansen. It’s hard to know whether to regard Tycho as a ‘he’, a ‘they’ or an ‘it’, since it takes on so many forms, from recorded to audio visual to on-stage sensory overload. The common thread is that all the material is eye-wateringly beautiful and wonderfully serene. The description for the title track describes the album as a ‘departure’ which ‘explores darker themes’. Give it a stream and decide for yourself.
