Single of the Week: Tall Black Guy feat. Yusef Rumperfield – Come With Me and Fly

After a short hiatus, I’m delighted to announce that Single of the Week has returned to the eyewaves, and we’ve got some serious megafauna for you this week. Over the past couple of years, Tall Black Guy (or Tall Black Guy Productions, to give him his full name) has been the exciting new kid on the block in Detroit, following the footsteps of Moodymann, Theo Parrish, Carl Craig and others. His biggest local counterpoint though? J Dilla, as evidenced by buttery smooth hip-hop cuts like this one.

Taken from his upcoming album, which will be released on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide label later this year, it features a rolling, rippling drum beat and some quirky, almost 16-bit esque vocal chirps that make it sound like a family of sprites are having some kind of in-depth discussion in the background. This, combined with the warm synth tones makes for one of the loveliest tracks ever put out under the TBK banner, and that’s saying something.
