Single of the Week: Salt Ashes – ‘If You Let Me Go’

if you let me go

Salt Ashes may not sound like something you’d want on your tongue, assaulting those taste buds of yours, but is definitely something you want to let slide inside your ears, seducing those drums and teeny, tiny bones. Otherwise known as Veiga Sanchez, Salt Ashes is the name of the 22 year old’s musical output, and one which is just as striking as the music it is attached too.

Taking influences from the likes Giorgio Moroder, Madonna, Daft Punk, and other significant figureheads in the blurred worlds of electronica and pop music, Salt Ashes creates an atmospheric and brooding blend of sultry synthpop. It’s a sound that has lead to be compared to a combination of Kate Bush and Kylie Minogue, and one that has garnered her some serious attention she first made a big impact with her cover of ‘Black Celebration’ by Depeche Mode; which you should also check out – HERE.

Her choice of cover gives you a strong suggestion as to the sound Salt Ashes is going for; one of dark and somewhat goth-tinged synthesized pop with sexually charged undertones. The comparison of Kate Bush meets Kylie Minogue is a big clue too, with one representing out and out pop with a penchant for disco and electronica, with the other being a legend of art driven experimental pop.

This week sees her release her latest single ‘If You Let Me Go’, which calls to mind Deep Cuts period The Knife and the ultra-cool and contemporary Grimes. ‘If You Let Me Go’ pulls the atmosphere back and strides forward with catchy, but still arty, synth pop laden with hooks and groove, but still able to bring that atmosphere forward from time to time and push the pop back.
