Middle Distance might look like a bunch of pretty indie boys from London, but even a quick listen to their latest single ‘Coming of Age’ proves they’ve got some sterner stuff in them. If you think of an English version of Fatherson, with glitter on, you’re in the right ballpark.

‘Coming of Age’ is the first song to be lifted off the band’s forthcoming sophomore EP ‘Dahlia’, which is set to be released later this year. With a down to earth lyrics – note the to-camera “ah man, that was sick” comment at the end of the video – and shimmering guitar, Middle Distance seem just happy enough to sound like they’re smiling at life through gritted teeth.

With more indie rock (or do they prefer ‘alt rock’?) bands around now than you can shake your fist at, what makes Middle Distance stand out? Perhaps it’s because dropping Shakespeare into a lyric makes them seem impossibly English, perhaps it’s because they mean what they say, or perhaps it’s because they’re confident and don’t seem to be hiding behind a layer of pretentious bullshit.
