SINGLE REVIEW: Shallows – ‘Pale’

Shallows Pale single review

Several years ago I had a Tumblr page where I only posted image that had the hashtag ‘pale’. It turns out that Shallows found that page and made it into a music video.

On July 29th, Liverpool trio Shallows release their next single, ‘Pale’. It’ll be part of a double A-side vinyl release with ‘House of Love’. From the band’s image, I’d be genuinely disappointed if the vinyl isn’t translucent and coloured. This announcement accompanies the news that they’ve recently been picked up by Key Management (Pixies, Fratellis, Mew).

It may sound like I’m being critical or even mocking the band’s aesthetic – it’s more than I’m surprised someoen wrote a song that accompanies the images so well. We’re talking bleached out pictures of white faces and heavy shadows, romanticised cigarettes and alcohol, big, bold print, and excessive use of the word ‘baby’.

The sleepy haze that covers the images is matched perfectly in the music. Grunge-y layered vocals, blast of neon high notes and the fuzzy mist. ‘Pale’ pulls you in and buzzes around your head like a swarm of bees. This is nostalgic indie pop, the rose tinted glasses to memories long gone. If you’re looking for a song to make your life feel like something from a 90s teen film, this is it.

It’s an unusual style of video, but it’s sufficiently cool. Would definitely have been cooler if they’d used photos of the band.
