Scream’s Halloween Special: What to Expect

The last season of Scream ended on a high note with a finale that was both intense and suspenseful. But more than that, the ending of the season left us with promises of a new killer and left us with too many questions and expectations. Thankfully, MTV’s got us covered and will be airing a 2-hour Halloween special episode on October 18th and the promos and trailers that have been released so far certainly make it seem promising.

Scream has had two solid seasons so far. With the possibility of the third season dwindling, this two-hour special could be the big finale or an easy entry into a jam-packed third season. Either way, it has a lot to live up to:

Brandon James and the original murders

This is probably the biggest question that has been around since the very first season of the show. Though most of Lakewood seems to be convinced that the original murders were committed by an unhinged Brandon James, and were quick to turn to him and his possible family members for the next round of murders, there are characters in the show who seem more convinced of his innocence than anything else.

The more the show unravels, the more it seems to suggest that the original murders were not as black and white as they were made out to be. But the show is yet to give us any definitive answers.

The new sneak peek of the Halloween Special, however, suggests that we might finally get the chance to find out about Brandon James, and through that, I hope, about the original murders.

Kieran Wilcox

I’ll admit that Kieran was far from my favourite character on the show, but his reveal as the cold-blooded murderer was done brilliantly and did a lot to explain the character’s previous behaviour during the season.

The end of the season suggested that this “new” killer is not one that Kieran knew about beforehand. The promo backed this up with a shot of Kieran in prison where the killer is lying in wait for him. But the question is, why? Does this new killer want to kill Kieran for “putting on his mask?” Or is he more interested in teaming up?

The showrunners have already implied that there is more to come with Kieran’s character, and considering his new development, I’m interested to find out where they take his character. After all, as viewers of the show, we might have known Kieran for two seasons, but it seems we barely knew him at all.

Maggie’s past

Throughout season two, the audience were made all too aware that the Sheriff and Maggie knew a lot more than they let on. They even implied that they had some part in creating this killer who is “obsessed with Emma.” Yet, it’s never revealed who it is that these two are afraid of.

Obviously, this killer that the Sheriff and Maggie are afraid of is tied up in their combined past. So it definitely isn’t Kieran. I hope that if the show does delve into Lakewood’s past, and the original murders, it also tells us about Maggie and the Sheriff’s involvement in these events.

The New Killer

The trailer suggests that, though we’re not leaving behind the Brandon James story, there’s a new story at works. While the promo showed the Ghostface mask, the trailer emphasised a brand new mask that isn’t related to the Brandon James mask at all. This new killer’s past is tied into the island that the Lakewood six are travelling to. I’m excited to find out the story behind the new killer. At the same time, I hope that the show finds a way to tie it in with Brandon James.
