Controversy time, people. The final episode of Sherlock’s 4th season aired Sunday, and the ratings are in. They’re down, giving this disillusioned fans hope that people have finally realised the show has lost its edge.

Specifically, overnight figures reveal a total viewership of 5.9 million UK fans. That’s down from the 8.1 million who tuned in for Sherlock’s season 4 opener two weeks earlier. Have fans finally figured out they’re watching a hot mess every week?

Well, no, and there’s actually been moments of season 4 which make me hopeful. The overnight figures do not account for fans who saw the season 4 finale at the movie theatre, which is apparently a thing the BBC are still doing with Sherlock. Neither do they factor in the effects of a reportedly leaked Russian version of the episode in the days before the broadcast.

Sherlock’s viewing numbers will no doubt receive a handsome bump upwards over this week as people catch up via BBC iPlayer.

There’s no accounting for taste. Sherlock will no doubt continue to entrance people with its snappy dialogue, hiding its inconsistent structure and reliance on worn out tropes behind excellent turns from its cast.
