Pop Songs Become Pop Sonnets, Results are Awesome

Are pop songs the popular poetry of our age? Are films the popular novellas, or short stories, of our age? Are the boxset series the epic novels of our age? Some might speculate, most probably won’t. I for one hope not, as I’m hoping to blag my way to the grave writing poetry, short stories, and novels. If it is the case, well, I’m gonna have to start honing the craft of three different mediums. Say it ain’t so, mamma! Say it ain’t so, papa! SAY IT AIN’T SO! SAY IT AIN’T SO, RIVERS CUOMO!

Anyway, moving swiftly on from my life-plan panic, as far as mass appeal and widespread influence it probably is the case – literature has been usurped. That’s not to say it’s dead, it’s not. However, entertainment is a very different beast to the long forgotten days of yore. In which case, pop songs (specifically their lyrics) would indeed be the popular poetry of today. Now, that might be a crying shame to some, and others might scoff at the very notion of pop lyrics having any literary worth.

Until now!

Sort of, well not at all really, but the ‘Pop Sonnets’ blog has gone about bridging the gap between this very modern poetic form, and the popular poetic form of back in the day, being (if you hadn’t guessed) sonnets. It makes sense; both varieties pretty short, and generally bang on about love in one way or another. You see, ‘Pop Sonnets’ have taken especially popular pop lyrics and rewritten them into classic sonnet form, and more traditional poetic language. The results are genius.
