Pompeii Rebuilt From Lego, Not Quite in a Day Like Rome

Imagine if your job title was literally ‘Lego Professional’, wouldn’t that be something? Well what if I told you that such a job wasn’t the far off fantasy of Imaginationland or Rand McNally. Australian Ryan McNaught, aka The Brickman, is one of only 12 people who claims the title, certified by Lego themselves and he’s been making it count recently. His list of commissions is long and impressive but recently he outdid himself by recreating the entirety of Pompeii.

Pompeii is, of course, the Roman settlement which was completely entombed when Mount Vesuvius erupted nearby. McNaught was commissioned to recreate the city by the Nicholson Museum in Sydney. It took 190,000 bricks and 470 hours to complete, and is now the largest Lego recreation of an ancient city there has ever been. In previous projects done for the museum, McNaught has built the Colosseum and the Acropolis. 2512E09F00000578-2926524-The_Forum_of_Pompeii_recreated_in_Lego_is_pictured_It_also_shows-a-13_1422271580511

Apart from just being really cool as a concept, the project is intended to generate more interest in the history of Pompeii, particularly amongst young people. On some level it also teaches a valuable lesson about the respect that should be paid to the actual site, since years of tourism have resulted in irreparable damage and theft.
