Poem of the Week: ‘My Friend, What Happened’ by Lucy Storer

Poem of the Week

3rd Place
‘They Said’ by Marc McCann

Work, they said, toil long and wait not
For idle thought to save you
But honest work can be forgot
As routine days enslave you

Live, they said, live life to the max
And strangers will adore you
But dying was a hefty tax
For those that lived before you

Talk, they said, Fill the awkward silence
People find concerning
But talking is a joyless chore
When worn out words mean nothing

Learn, they said, learn so you can graduate
From institutes of high esteem
They can’t teach you to contemplate
The gravity of childhood dreams

Love, they said, love everything in every way
For things will soon be gone
But loving is a thorny trail
That knows no right or wrong
