Poem of the Week: ‘New Horizons’ by Martin Haddelsey

3rd Place
‘Half Life’ by Anthony Ward

On the surface
Everything seemed as it were-
Normal.

Everyone appeared to go about their business
As if nothing had happened.
The light blinding them from the cloud
That suppressed them with darkness.

They may have anticipated the blast-
The initial destruction,
Thinking they had survived the worst of it-
But the worst was yet to come.

The interrogation of their anatomy
Exposed to the imposition of gamma rays
Would reveal the shadows of their stricken interiors.

Their degeneration accelerating
The disintegration of dignity
Through a St Vitas silence of transient patience-
Until left neither living nor dead.
