Playlist of the Week: Best of the Year – Part 2 – Jazz, Funk & Soul

So, we move on to the next chapter of our annual musical roundup, and boy was this one fun to put together. With all the reckless genre-bending that’s going on in modern music, the lines between jazz, funk, soul, R&B and even hip-hop can sometimes be difficult to trace. As a result, there are a few tunes on here that could have just as easily featured on last week’s list.

They’re a minority, though, soulful interludes between lashings of deep, intricate, trance-inducing jazz. It’s been an insanely good year for jazz music, with a massive breakout release from Yussef Kamaal and strong efforts from reliable vets like Snarky Puppy, BadBadNotGood and Victor Wooten. It would be impossible to boil it down to just 20 tracks, but give these a go, see if you’re not chasing the train by the end.
