MUSIC VIDEO REVIEW: Pearl Lion – ‘Big Sky’

Good music videos do not get enough attention. I have strong views on what makes a good one (no flashing lights, please). Pearl Lion’s latest video is not only a perfect example of how a video can bring something extra to a music video, but also of how video’s should be created to complement and enhance the music. The video for ‘Big Sky’ is captivating.

In fact, it feels more like a short film than a mere music video. The cinematic style style obviously helps this, but there’s more. This feels like a story about the huge empty landscapes and their contrast to the hurriedness of civilisation. The rushing headlights only take up a handful of moments among the minutes of scenery. If nothing else, it feels like a compelling travel agents’ video. The music’s swoops and crashes match the footage perfectly.

The video is made of footage from the southwest, including Zion National Park in Utah, Joshua Tree National Park in Arizona; Mohave Desert in California; and abandoned houses along Route 66 in Texas. After watching, you’ll want to see it for yourself. Pearl Lion has created one of my favourite music videos ever.
