New Godzilla Trailer Drops

With only a few weeks left until the theatrical release, another tantalizing trailer has been released for the new Godzilla film. The previous trailers and press releases have already established this to be a far darker affair than the previous US version (or more or less any Godzilla movie to come out in the past 30 years) with an emphasis on emotional weight, peril and weighty emotional peril, served up by Bryan Cranston, Sally Hawkins and a host of other contemporary actors that you wouldn’t expect to go anywhere near this type of film (usually a good sign).

With this new trailer we are offered a closer look at one of the ‘MUTOs’, Godzilla’s sparring partners for this particular outing. Judging from Ken Wantanabe’s ominous narration, getting Godzilla to lock horns, tentacles, phalanges and whatever else with this thing is a fairly significant contingent of the plot. Putting aside the fact that such a plot device was also present in Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, I find this fairly encouraging. Having at least one other monster involved gives the film a good excuse to increase the scope and giving Godzilla something to fight means that we get a true modern reimagining of a Kaiju film, rather than Cloverfield with less confusing advertising and less instances of people saying ‘dude’. The film will stomp into theatres on May 15th and looks to be the first real heavy hitter of the summer, in the mean time, check out the new trailer:
