New Ghostbusters Game Announced, Out in July

Ghostbusters game

Activision have announced the release of a Ghostbusters videogame out in 3 months (July 15th, to be exact).

If that date sounds familiar at all, it’s because it’s also the release date of the new Ghostbusters reboot, which will see four female heroes don the classic gear and bust some ghosts. Unlike 2009’s Ghostbusters game however, which saw you playing as the original cast in a 3rd-person action adventure, the new release seems to resemble a top-down, Diablo-esque shoot-em-up.

As well as looking at the action from above, you’ll also not be playing as the cast of the film – despite the release dates coinciding. The game – to be released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One – will have players take control of a “group of rookies who keep watch over the home while the real Ghostbusters get to work.” There’s said to be four playable rookies, each of which possess their own abilities and playstyle. Also mentioned is the presence of an upgrade system, which will allow players to earn better gear through completing tasks, defeating creatures, and finding collectible items hidden throughout the in-game Manhattan.

The brief trailer for the game looks promising, at the very least. Although the narration sounds a little cheesy (“The Ghostbusters are back in a brand-new videogame!”), the game looks visually interesting with bright colours, distinctive ghosts, and 4-player co-op. If they can deliver on some multiplayer that genuinely requires teamwork, then it could be a fun title to share with friends.

Additionally, Activision have also announced a Ghostbusters mobile game titled ‘Slime City’, to be released on undisclosed date in July on all the major app stores – though it may be safe to assume that this will come out just prior to the 15th of July, so that people can be introduced to the new Ghostbusters world which the film will likely expand upon.

Activision are certainly capitalising on the success of this year’s Ghostbusters movie, so let’s hope that it turns out decent.
