New Band of the Month: Spring King

new band of the month

As if Spring King aren’t happy enough right now with the release of their debut EP, Demons, they’re now Cultured Vultures’ New Band of the Month. I imagine the band are currently straight knocked out with a quick-succession one-two punch combo like that. I mean really quick succession, seeing as said EP arrived on Earth on the 8th of September. Though, no doubt Spring King will be quite alright with the speed of proceedings, as they’re quite the fans of pace.

Aforementioned EP is actually a damn good verifier of that fact, what with it getting the job done in under 15 minutes. But what does it get done in under 15 minutes? Well, it mostly gets a raucous and frenetic spot of punk-infused, lo-fi pop, indie and rock done in under 15 minutes, and 5 tracks precisely. It’s not just pace that the band deliver though, because they deliver a whole fucking lot of fun with that pace too.

Some of their songs, like ‘Better Man’ being a prime example, it’s just not possible to feel even a little bit shit listening to. Again though, that’s not all that’s on offer here because Spring King do dabble in tunes with a distinct psych and garage vibe, even slowing things down like on their track Demons. Spring King are a band that keep things simple, but they’re not afraid to make a mess of simplicity while they play with it.

Prior to releasing their debut EP, the band released a ‘concept-single’ and heavily tear up the gig circuit. As a live entity they are known for thrilling joyrides of performance, ramping the amps and energy of what they throw down on records to whole new levels. Their sets often emphasising the darker and brighter elements of their songs into starkly contrasting black and white – delivered like TV static. Speaking of live, the band are hitting the road this month.

With a fresh EP and fresh dates to catch the buzz live, ahead of plans for two full length albums next year, you’ve no excuse to not check out Spring King. Pacey as fuck. Raucous as fuck. Good as fuck.

Sonic touchstones to consider: Wavves, Japanther, The Reatards, Black Lips, The Vaccines
