New Band of the Month: Meat Wave

Meat Wave

Once you see a band dressed up like a harajuku nightmare, you know they’re for you.

A wonderful mish-mash of old and new school punk with a dashing of nerdiness to go with it, Meat Wave are worthy recipients of New Band of the Month for December. I managed to wag the chin of Chris with talk of pizza and Mr. Burns and a great time was had by all.

1) Hey dudes, how are you?
Yo! Pretty good. I’m answering these questions at the pizza place I work at and today I’ve been trolling all the people with the music. A minute ago I had New Radicals playing, now I think 50 Cent’s “What Up Gangsta” is on.

2) How does it feel to be declared our New Band of the Month?
It’s really cool considering the internet’s and peoples’ attention span. That’s a long while relatively.

3) Let’s start with the name. Are you trying to piss vegetarians off or?
I think the three of us rarely think of actual meat when considering the name. I look it as a funny, dumb pun. A lot of people like to tell us their interpretations though. A lot of people think it’s a sexual thing. Or just gross. I think it compliments what our music sounds like in a certain way.

4) You have a couple of shows to finish off 2014. Are you expecting to go out with a bang?
Totally, 2014 was really great to us as a band. We’re playing the album release of The Brokedowns, who are one of my favorite bands ever. Joe recorded the album too which is just another layer of awesomeness. Then a week or so later we’re playing on New Year’s Eve with the Muffs, which is rad. That night’s going to be nuts. I really hope I don’t have to DD because it’s been a rough year.

5) Do you have highlights from 2014? Any gigs you will never forget or any you wish you could?
This year we were really lucky. We were able to play with so many friends and as well as bands that we really love. Our east coast tour with Geronimo! was near perfect. Seeing and playing with Ovlov, Foul Tip and Guided By Voices were definite highlights for me personally.

6) Your new EP ‘Brother’ is out in January. What can we expect?
The EP is kind of for people who aren’t familiar with us yet. There’s two songs from our first record, two songs from our upcoming record, two brand new songs and a Wipers cover. I’m just really excited for us to get new music out. It’s been a while.

7) Are there any other bands we should be checking out?
I’ve been obsessed with Foul Tip, Melkbelly, Sheer Mag, Pile and Lenguas Largas. When we were in Brooklyn we played with this band called Vulture Shit. They blew our minds.

8) Do you have any advice for bands just starting out?
Not breaking any new ground but if you do exactly what you want and what you think is cool then you shouldn’t have any problems.

9) What can we expect from Meat Wave in 2015?
We’re going to England in January, which is when the EP comes out. Our new record will come out at some point. Lots of touring. We’re writing a bunch of new music now so I’m sure we will record another album.

10) And finally, if you were to have a pet vulture that would be quite cultured, what would you name it?
I’d name him Mr. Burns, because that’s just the vibe I’m getting from him at this point.
