Metal Gear Survive Announced, Features Zombie Unicorns and Wormholes

Metal Gear Survive

The first Metal Gear game since Hideo Kojima so acrimoniously departed Konami has been announced at Gamescom 2016. Metal Gear Survive is a multiplayer stealth game set in an alternate universe that will come to PS4, Xbox One, and PC next year.

The game starts after the events of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and sees players and soldiers joining forces to combat what looks like zombie unicorns after being sucked up into wormholes and arriving in wildernesses. I wish I was making this up.

According to a press release:

“In a struggle to stay alive on this harsh terrain filled with deadly creatures, soldiers who were previously on Motherbase now must work cooperatively in order to survive. Metal Gear Survive continues the pedigree of Metal Gear Solid 5’s highly praised gameplay design, with a unique blend of stealth and co-op play mechanics.

“Players can strategically manage massive threats with the help of four-player online cooperative play. New weaponry will also be introduced to combat charging creatures and lethal environments as well.”

Tomotada Tashiro, European President for Konami Digital Entertainment, also said:

“We are delighted to announce another exciting addition to the Metal Gear franchise, Metal Gear Survive, the series’ famed stealth elements but within a unique co-op setting that is designed for a truly engrossing multi-player experience.”

So, there you have it. The next Metal Gear game will feature zombies, wormholes, and will be a multiplayer shooter. Whoever worried about what Konami would do to the Metal Gear name once Kojima departed the company, it’s safe to say that you might have been right to be concerned.

I won’t say much else because one day Konami might become a legitimate developer again and I don’t want to be blacklisted. What I will say, though, is that this kind of nonsense seems to be exactly what pushed Kojima out of the door in the first place. A survival experience similar to Don’t Starve would have worked incredibly well for the Metal Gear series, but this is just the latest indication that Konami is a company themselves struggling to survive.

Konami seem to have forgotten to respect the titles that made their name, what with the cancellation of Silent Hills, the turning of it into a pachinko machine before doing the same to Metal Gear Solid. This spin-off looks even worse than Umbrella Corps and that’s saying something.
