I have to say, that patriot union meeting was the scariest one I’ve been to so far. I don’t know how many guys of you managed to make it, there were so many people in Triumph Square I couldn’t find any of you. I’ve been to gigs that were emptier than that place today. I guess I should probably tell those of you who didn’t go what you missed.

There was a band playing when I arrived, one of those super patriotic bands that kind of make you feel a bit sick if you listen to the lyrics. I looked at the screen to see the lead singer almost in tears as he wailed on about “This great land of ours”. I didn’t know who to feel more embarrassed for, the singer or all of us watching him. I looked around and people were air punching to the music. Felt like the odd one out for a change.

The stage fell silent and some Administration brass walked on to tremendous applause, the guy carried such an air of authority and respect that even I found myself clapping. He started going on about our gains in The War, how we were pushing the European borders further and further back. Nothing we haven’t heard before I guess. I can’t even remember how long The War had being going on for now. It seems like a constant in the universe, I cant even remember how it started? I guess the Europeans needed to be pushed back, I seem to remember CNN saying things were looking bad over there before The War broke out.

The screens on the stage showed some footage of tanks rolling over burnt out cars and flaming rubble in Vienna. Footage of soldiers running through the streets and draping flags over the buildings. Real motivating pictures about “Togetherness” and “Unity” came across the screen. In hindsight, it was all really hokey and empty, but it made me feel pretty patriotic at the time. Triumphant music played as captions read “The Austrian Campaign is OVER” and “One Nation Under God.” The cheers that came after that almost knocked me off my feet. It was infectious, I got caught up in it and for one glorious moment I felt nothing but pride for my country. It was like an out of body experience. It was kind of terrifying.

Things got pretty strange after that. The Administration guy started talking about how we needed to all contribute in order to win The War, the Industrial sectors were going to double their productivity, and every able body was needed for “the final push”. He went on about the inclusion sectors, about how The Administration were going to root out every one who wasn’t contributing, everyone who was “Leeching” off this great country. I thought about Saul, about how they were asking him to work the other day. The guy on stage was making people like Saul out to be criminals, draining on the economy. The poor guy can barely climb stairs without getting dizzy, I cant imagine they’d want to put him to work. Would they?

There were big cheers when the guy finished his speech, but I was so busy about thinking Saul that I wasn’t clapping.

They didn’t even mention Washington.
