The Libertines Premiere New Single and Video ‘Gunga Din’

The Libertines Guan Din

You hear that? That’s the sound of skinny jeans everywhere stretching with excitement. The reason? The Libertines reunion has officially, and finally, bared new fruit and rooted the future of these notoriously haphazard, ramshackle, and lackadaisical legends firmly in reality and fact.

After the first live reunion back in 2010, the band have been hinting, teasing, and whispering about a reunion proper ever since. With last year seeing them more fully stake their claim at reformation with more consistent live events, and in many eyes were certainly events and not mere gigs, with more on the horizon for this year, it looked promising. Even more so with Pete finally getting clean.

But then, what are reformed heroes without new heroics? Glory hangers onto? Money grabbers? Exploiters of a loyal following? A cover band? All of the above? Quite possibly.

Not to worry then, because not a day ago the band announced their long awaited third album, Anthems For Doomed Youth, and as if unable to restrain themselves of their own excitement, here we are not a day later with the first official new material from The Libertines coming in the shape of Anthem‘s lead single, ‘Gunga Din’.

Previously debuted live, with this studio version being debuted not two hours ago on Annie Mac’s Radio 1 show, the track finds the band cruising along on a dub groove decorated with surf guitar licks and Pete and Carl in classic back and forth lyrical trade off form. It’s The Libertines alright, but full up on everything its individual members have been through and created in between now and then.
