Junkenstein’s Revenge: Overwatch’s New Brawl Is The Best Yet

Still playing Overwatch? I know I sure am. And today I’ve been given even more reason to, because if you weren’t aware, Blizzard just dropped the much-anticipated Halloween update. The update, coming in at just over 4GB, is complete with skins, over 100 aesthetic items, and – perhaps best of all – an awesome new Brawl that essentially boils down to a horde mode: Junkenstein’s Revenge.

Taking place outside the gates of Eichenwalde Castle, you’ll play as one of 4 chosen heroes: The Alchemist (Ana), the Gunslinger (McCree), the Archer (Hanzo), or the Soldier (no surprises that it’s Soldier 76). Taking on your chosen role, you’ll have to fend off a swarm of mechanical zombies, all created by the nefarious Dr. Junkenstein (played, in this instance, by Junkrat). All the time the action is unfolding, a narrator that sounds suspiciously like Reindhardt commentates your every move.

Unlike your standard horde modes, this one doesn’t see you fighting for your life but instead fighting to defend the gates of Eichenwalde from destruction at the hands of the robot zombies. There’s iterations that will fire projectiles in order to try and eliminate you from the game, but the standard shufflers will do nothing but slowly approach the gates and detonate on arrival; lowering the health of the sturdy doors until they break under pressure. Manage to keep your defences up for a set amount of time, and you win the game. Fail to do so, and the castle is breached.

Not only do zombies attack the gates, but after holding out for a while you’ll be challenged by a number of familiar faces, though this time donning some of the new Halloween skins. You’ve got ‘The Reaper’, who is pretty self-explanatory, ‘The Witch’, who looks an awful lot like Mercy, and of course, ‘Junkenstein’s Monster’. The latter of which is an iteration on Roadhog, and is by far the toughest to knock out. They appear one at a time, and then The Witch revives them once she rocks up to the battlefield, so you’ll have a huge onslaught to power through if you hope to reach the end.

That’s about it, really. It’s not an incredibly complex mode, but it’s one which is ridiculously fun to play. Try mixing things up by playing a different hero each time, or perfect one and hold out for as long as you can – the choice is yours. Just be sure to open your new Halloween loot boxes and see if you managed to nab some of the great looking additions they’ve chucked in with this update!
