INTERVIEW: Distort – “I’m In Love With the Scene”

Distort band

Up and coming dubstep artist Distort has his big break coming in the form of a collaboration with the heavy-hitting producer 2fac3d on their debut EP. I talked to him about the experience and where his producing will take him in the future.

How did you first get into music production?
I got into electronic music mostly through listening to Skrillex in 6th and 7th grade. I fell in love with it and in my freshman year of highschool I decided I wanted to learn how to produce, make music and DJ. My favorite Skrillex tune has to be Rock N Roll… so much energy, such an amazing song!

And how did you end up collaborating with 2fac3d?
I met him through following him on twitter and asked if he had an email I could send my remix of Drake’s Big Rings to (that never saw a release/upload) and we ended up conversing for a while after that. He gave me tons of support which was awesome. Then recently he hit me up and said he was doing an EP and wanted to collaborate with me on it.

What has it been like working on a collaboration and what was the biggest lesson you took away from the experience?
It was actually very fast. He asked me to send him some stems of bass sounds I made. He sent me a video of an intro and build up he created and he dropped some of the bass sounds I made into the drop, then we played around with some other sounds I made and it all came together in about 1-2 weeks.

One thing I took from the whole experience is that a collaboration should flow really well. I’ve tried some collabs with other people and they just didn’t have the same flow as Tom and I had on ours. It just happened fast and we both liked how it came out. I’m really proud of it!

What are your thoughts on the electronic scene at the moment, particularly in the dubstep arena?
Honestly, I haven’t been around as long as most have so I can’t say too much, but I think the electronic scene now is amazing.

Everyone is so supportive, and there’s so many new things happening that I’ve never seen before. Especially with the dubstep scene, everywhere I look everyone is so supportive and positive about each other’s music. Just like Tom was to me, he was really supportive of my music, and another guy I know as well who goes by INF1N1TE who always helps me out with production when I ask. Everyone likes to give back to their fans now which is amazing. I’m in love with the scene right now! I hope things keep moving forward from where it is now.

Which artists have inspired you or made it into your playlist?
Very hard question! On the heavy side, it has to be guys like Killsonik, Funtcase, Pendulum, Noisia, and Phiso. On the more relaxed side, probably Ivy Lab, Sub Focus, Burial, Skream, and a couple of Skrillex tracks. And for bands, I actually really like Linkin Park and Slipknot. My favorite rappers have to be either ASAP Rocky, ASAP Ferg, Kendrick Lamar, or J Cole. One of my best friends always bumped 2014 Forest Hills Drive in the car and we jammed out to it all the time. My whole crew loves it!

What are your plans for the future in terms of producing?
I plan to keep making dubstep, but I recently discovered how fun it is making future bass, house, and liquid DnB. But I think I’ll always be making dubstep because I listen to it like 70% of the time. I just have a huge love for it. I’ve been really getting into making sounds in Serum lately… so much fun. Somedays I’ll just sit there and make sounds. Big ups to Virtual Riot for making that Serum In-Depth video.. I learned tons from that!

And finally, what would your vital tip be to budding producers about getting into producing?
Well at first you’ll hate everything you make. You’ve got to just power through those moments of confusion, and lack of knowledge. Once you do and you start learning things, you’ll have a lot more fun and you’ll be more confident! Youtube tutorials help tons.

Also it helps a lot to try and remake your favorite artist’s tracks. It’s almost like reverse engineering, to help you understand how they do things. Last thing would be to hang with people who are down with your music because they will be the ones who will support you through everything!

Stay tuned for Distort’s collaboration with 2fac3d on DOOM Records!
