Fox Wants To Make A King Arthur Cop Show

Like Romeo and Juliet, the story of King Arthur is truly universal. One of those classic tales which can be transplanted to any time or place and retain its essential heart and message. Actually though, no it isn’t. The legend of King Arthur is about a bunch of chivalric knights and a bearded wizard being all pious and looking for pseudo-mystical drinking goblets. So why do Fox want to make it into a New York cop show?

Courtesy of the Hollywood Reporter, Fox thinks its about time Arthur and his buddies were dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century. What does that mean? Well, to start with, Arthur is now Art. Instead of being a mythical king, old Art is a graffiti artist – because there are so many parallels between the two, obviously. Lancelot becomes Lance, while Guinevere is transformed into Art’s police officer ex-girlfriend. Such a seamless transition from legend to procedural.

The mystical stuff hasn’t entirely been jettisoned though. Art apparently has some destiny to discover and there’s talk of ancient magic and evil forces. It’s the sort of thing which earned Sleepy Hollow and Lucifer loyal audiences, something which is unlikely to have been lost on whoever pitched this to Fox. The network has already made a penalty commitment to the series, which normally means they’re contractually obliged to air the show or else pay significant penalties to the studio making the show.

In lieu of further cynicism though, we’d like to lay down a challenge to the writers of this show. All too often in this sort of procedural the male leads get to be the playful witty sort while the women are stuck with being the stiff, by the book foil. Don’t do it, guys. Be better.
