Constantine Comes to Arrow

Rejoice, Hellblazer fans. Constantine may not be returning for a new series, but the series’ star Matt Ryan is set to don the old trench coat again in a different place. He’s set to come face to face with Oliver Queen in Arrow.

Matt Ryan will appear in a season four episode of the CW adaptation of Green Arrow. At first glance this feels like a mismatch – Arrow hasn’t had much in the way of magic or demonic forces through its first three seasons. But more recently the show has begun to develop more mystical elements, so why not John Constantine?

Ryan confirmed the news in a tweeted video message after several months of rumours he would be making an appearance.

Struggling with ratings since its premiere last year, Constantine was dropped by NBC after only thirteen episodes. The show lacked consistency and fans criticised it for being too tame (what did you expect on NBC?), but Ryan very quickly owned the part of the Hellblazer.

For those who don’t know, John Constantine is a demon hunter and occult magician from Liverpool, England who lost his soul in a nasty bit of magic that went wrong. He even hangs around with angels from time to time.

So if all this is now canon in the Arrowverse, does that mean Oliver Queen could end up butting heads with the Devil? I look forward to the season five finale where Starling City is swallowed up by a Hellmouth or something.
