Sing It Three Times: Beetlejuice Musical in the Works

Beetlejuice

Well, we suppose it had to happen. As the protracted discussions for a follow-up to the 1988 film appear to have finally run out of steam, The New York Post has reported there are plans to develop Beetlejuice: The Musical. Guided by Tony-nominated writer and director Alex Timbers – after the Frozen musical let him go – the stage version of the enduringly popular Michael Keaton vehicle is targeting a premiere sometime in 2018 or 2019.

This news comes on the back of those reports that Beetlejuice 2 is now extremely unlikely to ever happen. Most recently Keaton himself has cast doubts over the project, stating that the “ship has sailed”, while original co-star Geena Davis has previously declared she would not return even if it hadn’t. The original Tim Burton production, also featuring Winona Ryder and Alec Baldwin, combined just the right amount of crazy horror with zany comedy. Fans have always feared that a sequel just won’t be able to recapture, or do justice to, the bizarre brilliance of the original, but a musical will offer the opportunity for an entirely new take on the story and characters.

Whatever happens, Timbers could well be the right man for the job and what if he could talk Keaton into reprising what is possibly his most iconic role? Let’s say his name 3 times and see what happens.
