Battlefield 1: Single Player Trailer Released

Battlefield 1

Following the immensely popular beta for DICE’s upcoming WW1 shooter, Battlefield 1, the developer has now dropped a tantalising trailer showing off the game’s single player component. The trailer primarily focuses on an American soldier deployed to the front lines, but also reveals some of the other protagonists that players will take control of once the game drops towards the end of October.

There’s some brief gameplay snippets spliced into the brief 2-minute show reel, though the focus is mainly put on showing off the game’s stunning graphics engine. Seriously, the detail and emotion on the faces of characters is sometimes beyond what we’ve come to expect from real-life movies or shows, and that’s saying something. For the first time in a while, I’m genuinely looking forwards to playing the single player of a Battlefield game as much as I am the multiplayer.

The only thing that’s a little odd when it comes to the trailer is how upbeat and triumphant the musical score becomes as the footage continues, considering how brutal and depressing WW1 really was. Still, if DICE manage to maintain the cinematic feel that they’ve created with these brief snippets, then they have something pretty special on their hands.

The only concern is that it was recently rumoured leaked that Battlefield 1’s campaign would only feature 6 missions – a fact that, if true, could mean a very brief playtime indeed. That’s not necessarily the end of the world, because people buy these games for their multiplayer components, but it would be a shame if the narrative experience was cut short just as it became enjoyable. Still, it’s better than Battlefront, which didn’t even have a campaign. So there’s that.
