It’s getting cooler as October is beginning, and that means soon it will be “bundling up” season. So luckily for us that will choose to warm up indoors, there are plenty of exciting games coming out this fall that we can occupy ourselves with.

1. Mafia 3

The sequel to the critically acclaimed Mafia 2, being developed by Hangar 13 and 2K, this game places you in the boots of Lincoln Clay, a man with a troubled past and a history of fighting in the Vietnam war. While you’re in control, you’ll be helping Lincoln serve the black mob, with even some help from our previous protagonist, Vito Scaletta. What we’re being presented with is a very pretty looking rendition of New Orleans, with a mixture of urban streets and isolated swamp lands. From gameplay and trailers we can tell that, if anything, it will be a refined version of Mafia 2, and considering just how great that game was, it’s safe to say that this game will be just as good if not better.

It will be nice to experience another story in the Mafia series all with a fresh coat of paint thanks to the power of the PS4 and Xbox One, and of course we can expect the PC version to look the best of all three versions if you have the hardware to make it so. What we can also see from gameplay is that there will be some very grisly melee kills and enhanced gunplay, both of which will make the game that much more fun to play as we’re sure to experience a game with plenty of mature themes.

Car handling should be easy to control in standard mode as the developers have stated that they want players to feel like a character in a high action cinematic experience, where you can use the car to ram others, shoot out tires, do stunts, and overall just use the car itself as the weapon rather than just a mode of transportation. And for those inclined to indulge in a little more realism, Hangar 13 and 2K have stated that a simulation mode will be present, allowing for more weighty and believable handling.

Mafia 3 has already gathered some pretty positive buzz from those that have been allowed to show gameplay (such as AngryJoe), but 2K games has unfortunately decided not to provide copies for early review. It’s hard to say if this is indicative of the game’s quality, but hopefully it turns out to be the action packed mafia story we’ve been hoping for when it releases this October 7th.

2. Gears of War 4

October 11th

Gears of War 4

It’s been about five years since the last gruesome title in the Gears of War series, with the only recent entry being the first game given a refreshing remaster. Though the gameplay formula that it arguably set in motion is starting to age, with many third person action games still following in its footsteps to this day, I don’t believe Gears of War has aged nearly as poorly as it could have.

Although Xbox Play Anywhere has had the best experience with everyone when playing their games on Windows, it’s at least nice to see Microsoft put some effort into their PC platform with this game as well, hopefully without the issues that games such as Quantum Break and Forza Horizon 3 have unfortunately been suffering through.

3. Battlefield 1

Next up is the much hyped Battlefield 1, taking the series’ historical setting back quite a bit to WWI. Thanks to a fairly successful beta, Battlefield 1 is shaping up to be quite the fun and interesting multiplayer experience that people are eagerly waiting for, showing that even such a setting as this the game has, it can be bombastic and fast paced as any other entry in the series. We’ve seen that not only are we getting a fetching looking game, but one that’s fairly easy to run on most modern systems, and though there are quite a few bugs and glitches hopefully DICE have learned from their previous mistakes and ensure that this game will be a polished experience. The game releases this October 21st on all three major platforms, likely taking up many online shooter enthusiasts’ time.

4. Titanfall 2

October 28th

Titanfall 2

This time going even further multiplatform by investing itself on the PS4 as well as Xbox One and PC, Titanfall 2 is a mech and a boots-on-the-ground based first person shooter. The original Titanfall was a beautifully fast paced and adrenaline fueled shooter that pitted you against not only fellow soldier combatants, of which could run along walls, jump around madly, and dodge into buildings, but also hulking mechs that you could hop into and mow down foot soldiers with glee. But you had to be careful, because the foot soldiers had tricks of their own for taking down the titans, so a well played Titan could either turn the tide of battle, or just end up a waste. But a new interesting addition to the game is what many were asking for with the last one, a true single player campaign. Hopefully the addition of this campaign hasn’t drawn too much time and resources from the ostentatious multiplayer mode.

5. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Special Edition

October 28th

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Special Edition is a perplexing addition to October’s gaming lineup. I say perplexing, because I’m not entirely sure the purpose other than a small cash-in. PC players have already had access to countless mods that add just as many, if not more, improvements to the Skyrim world we’ve all already inhabited for hundreds of hours. Obviously you get some more impressive improvements on the PS4 and Xbox One versions, at least visually, but will it be enough of a change for those that have already played through the entire game? Or is this really just meant for those that missed out on the game last generation and this offers them a more current way for them to experience it?

It’s hard to say right now, as initial reveal trailers haven’t impressed too much, and with the lack of modding support on PS4, it makes the proposition for those console owners a bit more disappointing. Still though, Skyrim is a massive game and a lot of fun depending on how forgiving you are for how much the game’s mechanics have changed since previous iterations of the series. It’s also refreshing to hear that owners of Skyrim’s Legendary Edition (or the base game and all its expansions) on PC will get the game as an update free of charge, at least providing a nice base for modders to continue to build off of and tweak to their desires.
